A ‘souper’ way to help others

January 26, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

With the biggest football game of the year on the horizon, students at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District are using the opportunity to help others.

The Student Council organized a “Souper Bowl,” which runs through Feb. 2. Donations will go to the Community Cupboard, a local food pantry that serves families in need in Bellmore and Merrick. Students and staff are encouraged to drop off cans of soup and place them in the box representing the team they think will win the Super Bowl.

Members of the Student Council made signs and announcements to encourage their classmates to give. After the game, they will personally deliver the donations.

“Other people aren’t as fortunate as us,” said student James Tarantino. “It feels good to make other people happy.”

Added Jeri Levitt, “You want other people to help you if you’re in that position.”

LI Royals 14U hockey team hosts Make-a-Wish

January 25, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

On Saturday, January 20th, the Long Island Royals 14U Hockey Team hosted their 3rd annual Make-A-Wish Fundraiser! This year, the team rallied the community to help grant the #wish of 6 year-old James from #Holbrook. James, who happens to love hockey, was excited to meet the players who are making his wish to visit the Disney Aulani Resort in #Hawaii come true.

The team of boys welcomed James as part of their team. When James arrived, he had his own stall in the locker room with his very own LI Royals jersey, he watched warm-ups from the bench, and did the honor of dropping the puck at center ice. We are so proud to partner with these players who truly understand the meaning of #teamwork both on and off the ice. Our sincerest thanks to the Long Island Royals 14U hockey team, Superior Ice Rink, the wonderful Sue Kav who organized the event, our friends from Chick-fil-A Commack who donated their services this past Saturday, and everyone who showed their support to James and his family.

Members of the girls volleyball and boys basketball teams at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District put their love for sports into practice as they raised $325 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The seventh- and eighth-grade student-athletes participated in a round-robin volleyball tournament on Jan. 11, where teams played each other for five minutes in elimination rounds until two final teams were set to play.

A special thank you to girls volleyball coaches Patty Burnside and Alexa Borresen and boys basketball coach Michael Magee for organizing this charitable effort.
